The Atari 2600 is one of the most iconic consoles to ever be released. That is hard to argue. This console was so influential that it is still receiving new games over three decades after it initially launched. That is what has prompted me to put together this list of upcoming Atari 2600 games that you need to watch for.
Remember, supporting those that support your entertainment makes more games come out.<!–more–>
All of these entries are available on the AtariAge forums unless otherwise noted.

First up, we have Sword of Surtr, by ultima. This Viking adventure is a little more in depth than other Atari 2600 games in that you are fending off wolves, ravens, avoiding traps, collecting artifacts, and more in a “Legend of Zelda” style view. <a href=”http://atariage.com/forums/topic/236282-sword-of-surtr/”>Development ROMs are currently available on AtariAge</a>.

Plague by MemberAtarian pits you as a middle ages doctor that is tasked with collecting herbs and healing items. The striking visuals (no color to speak of) and subject matter make Plague stand out against other homebrew independent releases on the Atari 2600. <a href=”http://atariage.com/forums/topic/274201-plague-atari-2600/”>Development ROMs are currently available on AtariAge</a>.

Space Cactus Canyon by bjbest60 is a rather interesting action game. You control the last cactus on Earth and must collect water. There are thirty canyons to traverse in your quest to find the space ship to take you back to Mars. <a href=”http://atariage.com/forums/topic/261911-space-cactus-canyon-beta/”>Development ROMs are available on the AtariAge forums</a>.
<img class=”alignnone wp-image-1484″ src=”https://readretro.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/gizzle_wap-300×219.png” alt=”” width=”600″ height=”438″ />
The Gizzle Wap and the Terrible Blizzard of Firn is a side scrolling action platform game by Mountain King. What is interesting about the Gizzle Wap is that you have a companion on your journey to find survivors – similar to how Tails followed Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. There is a lot going on in this tiny Atari 2600 program. <a href=”http://atariage.com/forums/topic/259569-the-gizzle-wap-and-the-great-blizzard-tent-name-wip/”>Development ROMs are available on AtariAge</a>.

Defend Your Castle by mr-atari is a Worms style, artillery throwing with the right angles and force, style game. While simple looking in execution, this one could easily shape up to be a great party game when released. <a href=”http://atariage.com/forums/topic/260184-defend-your-castle-will-be-released-on-christmas-eve/”>Follow development on the AtariAge forums</a>.
<img class=”alignnone wp-image-1485″ src=”https://readretro.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/golf_2600-300×219.png” alt=”” width=”600″ height=”438″ />
Golf 2600 by atari2600land is, well, golf for the Atari 2600. You may be wondering why I am including this on a list of interesting Atari 2600 games. I will tell you.
Sports move consoles. That is why early on we see sports games on just about every successful platform, certainly after it has found its legs. I am not saying Golf 2600 is going to cause a huge surge in new fans wanting an Atari 2600 but I can say, it is an interesting idea. The only golf game I can think of for the Atari 2600 made things look like you were playing mini golf.
Golf 2600 is attempting to bring a more professional looking, at least as far as games go, version of the classic to Atari’s console. <a href=”http://atariage.com/forums/topic/259783-golf-2600/”>Follow development on the AtariAge forums</a>.

Finally, rounding out this list is Mine Dig by mojofltr is setup like classics like Dig Dug or Boulder Dash. Your goal is to dig around, collect diamonds and rescue your fellow miners. <a href=”http://atariage.com/forums/topic/260288-mine-dig/”>Development ROMs are available on AtariAge</a>.
