While the Intellivision Amico is still well over a year away fans have been showing support for the original Mattel Intellivision console. While not as popular as the Atari 2600 is with independent homebrew developers, the Intellivision still receives new games from time to time. One new title that I wanted to bring to your attention is Pumpkin Master. Now, I am sure this is just me but looking at the title screen, I get a strong Halloween III vibe for some reason. I had to look twice to make sure the Silver Shamrock company was not behind this game.
Pumpkin Master is setup similar to Galaga, Galaxian, etc. Enemies appear at the top of the screen, or come in from the sides, and you shoot them from the bottom of the screen. Here is where everything goes off the rails so to speak.
You control your house, which is equipped with a proton cannon, to defend your neighborhood from “witched” pumpkins. Your neighbors have already moved their homes far away and left you alone in this quest. Seriously, they literally took their homes and left the area – all detailed in the intro.
Pumpkin Master has a strong Galaxian mixed with Centipede/Millipede vibe to it. The enemy pumpkins are fast moving, take one shot to destroy, and move all over the screen in recognizable patterns. There are even bosses to take on, these are giant witched pumpkins that you destroy piece by piece. Don’t get hit by the falling pieces or it could spell the end of your home based, literally, defense effort.
Pumpkin Master for the Intellivision console became available late last year and there are still copies available. Unfortunately, if you wanted a boxed copy, complete with overlays, those copies are long sold out. If you want the cart only though, you are in luck, just head over to Tim Duarte’s website to purchase your copy.
