In a little over a year from now, we’ll hopefully be watching the new animated movie of Mario and his Mushroom Kingdom friends in theaters. But that’ll be just the beginning because Nintendo is planning more future movies based on their most popular IPs.
When asked about the subject on a recent Q&A session between Nintendo and their investors, the one and only Shigeru Miyamoto answered the question stating that the animated movie is pretty much finished, but they still have plans for more. This is what he said according to the translation by game journalist David Gibson:
“Would like to roll out with other IPs for movies etc, people should experience IP in variety of [ways]. But going one by one, not say doing many IP movies at same time.”
This means that we won’t be seeing new Nintendo movies in the same year, but maybe within a year or two between their theater run. Unlike for example the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, where we see between 3 or four films each year.
Now, the big question is: What characters should be the next ones to have their own movie? Recent rumors suggest that Donkey Kong with Seth Rogen might be next. But with Nintendo having so much great IPs, the sky is the limit. We could be on the brink of seeing movies of The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Fire Emblem, Splatoon, and so many more franchises. Which one would you like to see next?
