Who would’ve thought back in 1981 that an ape created by Nintendo would become one of the most popular video game characters in history? Donkey Kong celebrated his 40th anniversary in 2021, and even though he didn’t have a new game this year, he has several things to celebrate for.
Nintendo has announced that the Donkey Kong series has sold 65 million units worldwide (as of march 2021). This includes classic Donkey Kong games, as well as the DK Country series. There has been a Kong game in every Nintendo console to date, including portable consoles. But the original DK game was also released on third-party systems, such as Atari 2600, Commodore 64, Intellivision, and many other ones.
Donkey Kong has other good news to celebrate today. The Big N announced that the Super Nintendo World theme park will have an expansion dedicated to the big ape and his furry crew that will open its doors in 2024. So that’s another reason to plan a trip to one of the Universal Studios theme parks around the world.
How many of its games have you played?
