Batman: The Animated Series has been hailed as one of the best and most influential ones of its kind ever, setting new standards in writing and mood. A documentary about it, previously on the Blu-ray released a few years back, is now available on YouTube. Called “The Heart of Batman”, it clocks in at almost 100 minutes and goes into detail on the series.
Influences, the art style combining noir and art deco, storyboarding and many other topics are covered in plenty of interviews with the original staff. Among the interviewees we find co-creator Bruce Timm, producer Alan Burnett and Mark Hamill, who voiced The Joker.
The series spawned an avalanche of merchandise, comic books, feature films and a few video games during the 16-bit generation. A reboot is in the works by HBO Max.
