Adventures of Timothy Gunn is a new 2D side scrolling action game for the Amstrad CPC for the CPCRetroDev 2018 contest. This years contest was to make a game in tribute to Topo Soft’s “Chicago’s 30” game which was released in 1988. What fans get is a 2D run and gun title that has some strong Duke Nukem 1 and 2 vibes emanating from it.
The action in The Adventures of Timothy Gunn comes fast and it comes from both sides of the screen. Your job is to go through each level and eliminate all of the vermin that wish to end your life early.
Graphically, The Adventures of Timothy Gunn is impressive, colorful, and features smooth animation. All necessary for a run and gun game. Go ahead, take a look at the image of Duke Nukem 1 below and tell me it is not quite similar to the video of Adventures of Timothy Gunn above.
Chicago’s 30 was a 2D side scrolling run and gun game as well so it makes perfect sense for The Adventures of Timothy Gunn to be one as well. Other franchises that served as inspiration for this game include the movie Cobra starring Sylvester Stallone and Terminator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. While the graphics are too bright and colorful to see the direct inspiration those movies had, I am sure it is there somewhere.
Enemies will come in many shapes and sizes, some armed with guns, others quick to fling weapons at you, all wanting to end your game as quickly as possible. Your job is to run, gun, and jump through the levels and survive.
